Richard N. Toews
Richard N. (Rick) Toews was called to the bar in 1985 and practiced in downtown Vancouver for 8 years before moving his residence from Kitsilano to Squamish with his wife in 1993 to raise their three children "out of the city". He commuted daily to Vancouver for the next 5 years and then established a satellite office in Squamish, expecting to develop a one to two day per week practice in Squamish. The Squamish practice grew quickly, and in 2001, after practicing primarily in downtown Vancouver for 16 years, Mr. Toews change the focus of his practice to Squamish and made the Vancouver office his satellite office. The Squamish practice has flourished since then, with most new clients being from the Sea to Sky Corridor. The Vancouver office, located on West Georgia Street, is now the satellite office for the firm and continues to be used to service new and existing clients in the Lower Mainland.
For the first ten years of his career, Mr. Toews practiced primarily as a civil litigator, with a broad practice area, including personal injury, family law, corporate/commercial, construction and real estate litigation, and wrongful dismissal claims. Mr. Toews also maintained a modest solicitor's practice, including corporate/commercial work, conveyancing and wills and estates. Since the mid 1990's, Mr. Toews has continued to practice both as a litigator and solicitor, and now carries on a substantial solicitor's practice, with many corporate and individual clients from the Sea to Sky Corridor.
Mr Toews has represented personal and corporate clients in Provincial Court, Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. Mr. Toews' clients benefit from his broad range of skills and experience, as he is able to draw on solutions and remedies from a number of areas of law.
A strong family man, Mr. Toews has no regrets whatsoever regarding moving his residence from Vancouver to Squamish and later changing the focus of his practice to the Sea to Sky Corridor. The Sea to Sky Corridor is a great place to raise a family, with incredible outdoor recreational opportunities at its doorstep. Mr. Toews looks forward to continuing to provide legal services for existing residents and businesses in the Corridor, as well as new residents and businesses who are discovering that Squamish is in fact an ideal place to live, work and play, and raise children.
Mr. Toews is an avid golfer. He and his family also enjoy many of the other outdoor activities that the Sea to Sky Corridor has to offer, including hiking, mountain biking and skiing.
Kristen Courtney grew up in rural Ontario before moving to Ottawa to complete a Bachelor of Humanities at Carleton University, where she received the Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She then obtained her law degree at the University of Toronto, where she was awarded the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Fellowship and the Fogler Rubinoff Prize in Municipal and Planning Law.
Throughout her studies, Kristen wore many hats, working at various times as a cycle touring guide, a French tutor, a personal support worker for the elderly, a barista, a teleservices agent, and in outdoor retail. She also made time for a bike ride from Halifax to Bella Coola to raise funds for cancer research, and a busy schedule as a community activist, advocating for safe bike lanes and sustainable urban transportation in Toronto.
Upon receiving her law degree, Kristen articled in Brantford, Ontario, where she practiced civil litigation, representing both individual and corporate clients in various courts and tribunals. She was called to the bar in Ontario in 2009 and in British Columbia in 2011.
Kristen then worked for the Parliament of Canada, providing legal analysis to M.P.s and senators, particularly in the areas of natural resources, environmental assessment, and aboriginal law; and then for Saxe Law Office as a contract lawyer while she pursued her other part-time career as a downhill mountain bike racer, racing in national and international events across North America.
After many years visiting and living part-time in the Sea to Sky, Kristen is very excited to finally call Squamish home again. She joined Toews & Co. in 2015, where she practices in litigation and solicitor’s work. When not at the office or off racing, Kristen can usually be found in the bike park, trail riding in Squamish, or backcountry skiing.
